The world is entering a new phase of globalization that is full of complex and interrelated challenges which, if not managed well, can result in the slowdown of the global economy.

One of the challenges that go along with the New Globalization is the uncertainty from global trade restructuring. This topic will be discussed in one of the parallel sessions of the Annual Public Conference Policy (APPC), which will be conducted on September 19, 2019, at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. The APPC is organized by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) as the main activity of the Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) celebration held annually. The theme of both DPRM and APPC this year is “Navigating the New Globalization: Local Actions for Global Challenges” or in Filipino, “Paglalayag sa Bagong Globalisasyon: Lokal naPagkilos sa mga Pandaigdigang Hamon”.

In one way or another, doing day-to-day activities as well as complex and more challenging tasks has been significantly easier because of technological developments over the years.

However, as the world enters a new phase of Globalization, known as the “New Globalization”, or “Globalization 4.0” according to the World Economic Forum, these innovations will also worsen income inequality within and among countries, posing concerns on their fairness and inclusivity.

This year’s Annual Public Policy Conference (APPC) organized by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will focus on the topic of ‘New Globalization’, its challenges and implications, as well as the opportunities that come with it.

The APPC is the highlight and culminating activity of the Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) celebration led by PIDS pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 247. Held every September, the DPRM aims to promote, enhance, instill, and draw awareness and appreciation of the importance and necessity of policy research in development planning and policymaking.  

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), and Mindanao State University in General Santos City are joining forces to conduct a policy research forum on September 10 as part of the celebration of the 17th Development Policy Research Month (DPRM). The forum will discuss the challenges of the New Globalization and its potential impacts on Mindanao.  

To increase awareness of Filipinos about the concept of the New Globalization and deepen their understanding on issues and opportunities that come with it, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) chose this topic as the theme of this year’s 17th Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) celebration.    

The DPRM is a PIDS-led event held every September to promote awareness on the importance of policy research in the formulation of evidence-based policies, programs, and projects. The month-long celebration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 247 and aims to cultivate a strong culture of research and use of data and evidence in policymaking and program planning among the country's national and local decisionmakers.
